Del escándalo al olvido: La resolución de Caso SQM sin culpables

In Causa y Efecto, we discussed the SQM case, which has once again emerged as one of the biggest political and judicial scandals in recent years. After nearly a decade of investigation, the last eight defendants were acquitted, thus closing a case that began in 2015 and had kept public opinion in suspense. Although illegal political financing through false invoices was proven, the court determined that the defendants were not criminally responsible. Among the most recognized names, the case involved figures such as Marco Enríquez-Ominami and Pablo Longueira, in a case involving irregular political financing. Nibaldo and Leila agreed that, although crimes were proven, the Internal Revenue Service played a key role in the failure of the investigation by failing to file complaints for the irregular invoices. During the conversation, it was recalled that the case began with 240 people under investigation, and only eight were brought to trial. This disparity, combined with the passage of time, reinforced the idea that justice acts with unequal severity. The hosts warned that this outcome does not erase the fact that illegal financing existed and that many perpetrators were left out of the case. The discussion also highlighted the deterioration of institutions after years of scandals: collusion, abuses in the Church, embezzlement in the Armed Forces, and now the closure of SQM without convictions. For both journalists, the decision seriously damages the Prosecutor's Office, casts doubt on the effectiveness of the judicial system, and raises fears that cases like those involving the foundations or agreements will follow the same path: extensive investigations, compelling evidence, but no one responsible.
