During Michelle Bachelet's second term, a major crisis erupted in Chilean politics: the crisis of hidden and illegal campaign financing. This was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, and primarily by its legal sub-director, Cristian Vargas, who waged a fierce battle to unravel the whole affair and bring the truth to light. He lost this fight and was ultimately dismissed from the Internal Revenue Service, but several years later he published a book titled "Impunity: A Chronicle of the Internal Revenue Service and Politics." In it, he recounts step by step his experiences within the service, the political pressure he endured, the web of cover he was pressed into, and the eventual impunity that ultimately prevailed.
