Roof of the World |S2-EP9| PART 1
After two nights in Lijiang, it was finally time to get back on the road. Lijiang had already given me more than I expected. Ancient streets, snow covered mountains, and a glimpse of how massive this country really is. But the road doesn't wait, and neither does this journey. With thousands of kilometres still ahead and only limited time to cross China, it was time to point IBEXX north and continue towards Shangri la. The distance on paper didn't look like much, but in China, every day feels like an expedition. The scenery changes constantly, the mountains keep getting bigger, and every turn seems to reveal something that deserves a stop. Not far from Lijiang, we passed through landscapes that looked like they belonged in a painting. Towering peaks surrounded the valleys while rivers carved their way through the mountains. The higher we climbed, the more I could feel the journey changing. The influence of Tibetan culture was slowly beginning to appear, and with every kilometre the Roof of the World felt closer. But the biggest surprise of the day was still waiting ahead. Carved deep into the mountains of Yunnan lies one of the most spectacular natural wonders in China Tiger Leaping Gorge. The road twists its way towards a canyon so deep and dramatic that it almost doesn't look real. Below, the powerful Jinsha River crashes through the gorge, squeezed between giant mountain walls that rise thousands of metres above the water. Standing there, looking into the gorge, it was impossible not to feel small. According to local legend, a hunted tiger once escaped by leaping across the narrowest section of the canyon, giving the gorge its famous name. Whether the story is true or not, one look at the place and you immediately understand why it became legendary. The scale is difficult to describe. Massive cliffs, roaring water, and mountains stretching endlessly into the sky. China keeps finding new ways to surprise me. And this is only the beginning. Because beyond Tiger Leaping Gorge, the road keeps climbing. Higher into the mountains. Higher towards Shangri la. Higher towards the Roof of the World.
