PRANATAMANGSA - Kalender Musim Petani Jawa

Pranatamangsa—The Javanese Farmer's Seasonal Calendar—is a cultural heritage and local wisdom that has been practiced by farmers and agrarian communities in Java for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Pranatamangsa is a calendar or system for calculating the seasons (in Javanese, "mawang") from year to year. This seasonal calendar is truly a universal cultural practice for all humans inhabiting the earth, and therefore, similar calendar practices also exist and develop in other societies in other regions and around the world. The seasonal calendar in Pranatamangsa is based on the relative movement of the sun each year. In this seasonal calendar, the sun begins when the sun rises directly in the northeast, or 23.5 degrees north latitude (N), when the northern hemisphere experiences summer and the southern hemisphere experiences winter. This condition occurs precisely on June 22nd. On this date, the human shadow at 12:00 noon is 4 feet, or 4 pecak (in Javanese). Each mangsa has a different day length, adjusted for the angle of the sun's rays on Earth. When the first season, or mangsa kasa, begins, the weather in Java is clear. In the past, this was the period after the rice harvest and the beginning of the planting of secondary crops, as water levels began to dry up. The seasons continued until the final month, the twelfth (12th) mangsa (12th), or mangsa sadha, which began on May 12th and lasted until June 22nd of the following year. This twelfth season began when the human shadow at 12:00 noon measured three feet, or three pecak (Javanese). Essentially, Pranatamangsa is a seasonal calendar that regulates Javanese farming communities when to prepare the land, plant rice and secondary crops, and when to be vigilant about environmental conditions such as wind, floods, epidemics, or other disasters. However, with the advancement of science and technology, this knowledge of pranatamangsa has gradually been abandoned, as crop water needs are increasingly met by irrigation or other sources.
