The Sulzberg Castle ruins are among the most important medieval castles in the Allgäu region. Here is a brief timeline with the most important dates: • c. 1140–1170 Probably the first castle was built by the Lords of Sulzberg. • 1059 The village of "Sulceberch" is first mentioned in a document. • 1176 First documented mention of the Lords of Sulzberg ("von Sulciberch"). The family later became one of the most powerful noble families in the Allgäu. • 1237 The Lords of Sulzberg are documented as cupbearers to the Prince-Abbot of Kempten and gain considerable influence. At the same time, the castle is expanded. • Around 1240, a branch of the family also founds Sulzberg Castle near Goldach on Lake Constance. • 1358/1359 With the death of Konrad von Sulzberg, the male line becomes extinct. The castle passes to the Lords of Schellenberg through marriage. • 1480–1485 Marquard von Schellenberg has the castle extensively expanded. It is renamed "Schloss Sigmundsruh" in honor of Archduke Sigismund of Austria. • 1525 During the Peasants' War, the castle is presumably damaged. Due to heavy debts, the Schellenberg family sells the property to Friedrich von Freyberg. • 1526 Sale to the Prince-Abbey of Kempten under Prince-Abbot Sebastian von Breitenstein. Sulzberg becomes the administrative seat of the Wolkenberg-Sulzberg district. • 1632 During the Thirty Years' War, the castle is plundered by Swedish troops and locals. • 1648 The Prince-Abbey abandons the castle as its administrative seat. Afterwards, the castle begins to fall into disrepair. • 1729 Last documented mention of taxes and fiefs belonging to the castle. • 1805 The castle ruins are auctioned off and remain privately owned to this day. • 1953 Initial restoration work begins on the keep. • 1984 The "Friends of Sulzberg Castle" association is founded and has since been responsible for the restoration and maintenance of the ruins.
