This trek is as much a spiritual pilgrimage as it is an adventure, passing through the core area of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. 🗺️ Trek Itinerary (3 Days) Day 1: Bonacaud to Athirumala (16 km) Start early from the Bonacaud forest picket station. The trail takes you through lush forests and river crossings to reach the base camp at Athirumala by evening. Day 2: Athirumala → Summit → Athirumala (8 km total) The most challenging part. A steep ascent involving rope-aided climbs to reach the peak. After witnessing the breathtaking views and the Agastya Muni statue, descend back to the base camp. Day 3: Athirumala to Bonacaud (16 km) Retrace your steps back to the base station. 🚌 How to Reach KSRTC Bus: The first bus from Thampanoor (Trivandrum Central) starts at 5:00 AM. This is the best way to ensure you reach Bonacaud early for the 7:00 AM check-in. Return Journey: The last KSRTC bus from Bonacaud departs around 5:00 PM. Plan your Day 3 descent accordingly! 📝 Booking & Season Details Official Season: Usually from Makaravilakku to Mahashivaratri (Mid-January to late February/March). How to Book: Bookings must be made online through the official government portal: serviceonline.gov.in/trekking. Tickets sell out within minutes, so stay alert! Off-Season/Private Booking: For guided treks outside the peak window, you can contact private coordinators at +91 9847573633 (Note: This is a private service, not the government seasonal trek). 🎒 Essentials: What to Pack & What to Avoid The forest department is extremely strict about conservation. Your bags will be checked at the entry point. ✅ To Carry: Medical Fitness Certificate: Mandatory (issued within 7 days of the trek). Sturdy Trekking Shoes: Good grip is vital for the slippery rocks on Day 2. Jacket/Warm Clothing: It gets very cold at Athirumala base camp and the summit. Lightweight Bag: Keep it under 5-7kg.
