Critical Language Pedagogy: Learners as Agents of Social Change

Critical language pedagogy (CLP) is an approach to language teaching that incorporates critical thinking, social justice, and cultural awareness. It views language as a tool for social transformation, emphasizing the cultural and social contexts in which language is used and encouraging critical examinations of power, privilege, and oppression. As part of the Bellarmine Forum on Internationalization and the Liberal Arts, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures hosted a seminar featuring a talk by Professor Henry A. Giroux, who addressed the vital role that critical pedagogy plays in confronting the multiple threats facing education in our times.
