What is Law: Sources, Categories, & Areas of Law
Welcome back to 'Lightning Law Moments'! Join me as we seek to understand what the law is by unpacking the sources, categories, and areas of law. We start out by exploring the three sources of law here in Canada: Constitutional law, statute law, and common law. When it comes to the common law, we take a step back in time to the reign of King Henry II, whose Judges travelled to various parts in the kingdom to provide access to justice. We will then attempt to understand the differences between different categories (such as substantive and procedural law) and areas of law (such as criminal law, family law, tort law, contract law, property law, and employment law). We will do this using real examples from various statutes such as the Criminal Code and the Civil Marriages Act.
