Slaves then expressed themselves through song (bel air) and dance. Bèlè is therefore much more than just music: like gwo-kan in Guadeloupe, it is a true form of cultural expression to which musical instruments were later added: in the 18th century, when music was allowed, slaves added percussion to their singing and dancing. The rhythm is provided by sticks called ti-bwa, which are struck on the back of the drum. Title: Martinique, the Memory of the Drum Directed by Laurent Deboise ©NOON
