L2: Hierarchical design | understanding electronic design automation tools
Welcome to Lecture 2 of the course "Digital System Design" by Prof. Nitin Chandrachoodan Full Course: https://study.iitm.ac.in/es/course_pa... Video Overview In this lecture we move beyond the basics of digital systems and explore the structured and modular approach to designing complex digital architectures. Starting with fundamental building blocks such as logic gates registers and multiplexers we demonstrate how these components can be combined to form larger and more functional modules. We take a closer look at combinational logic components like half adders and full adders and explain how they are used to build an Arithmetic Logic Unit or ALU. From there we integrate the ALU with multiplexers control signals and a register file to illustrate how a Central Processing Unit or CPU is constructed. This lecture also highlights how these hardware design principles relate to modern processor architecture with a particular focus on the RISC V instruction set architecture. By the end of this session you will have a clearer understanding of how modular design leads to scalable and efficient digital system design in real world processors.. About IIT Madras' online Bachelor of Science programme IIT Madras offers four-year BS programmes that aim to provide quality education to all, irrespective of age, educational background, or location. The BS programme has multiple levels, which provide flexibility to students to exit at any of these levels. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education), Diploma(s) from IIT Madras, or BSc/BS Degrees from IIT Madras.
