COPINA: Camino de los Puentes Colgantes - 50 Lugares imperdibles de las Sierras de Córdoba

COPINA: The Hanging Bridges Road The Hanging Bridges Road is a 30-kilometer (17-mile) route located on Provincial Route 14. It forms part of an old road used since the time of Father Guacho to connect the Traslasierra Valley with the city of Villa Carlos Paz. It owes its name to the several suspension bridges built to span mountain streams. Following the High Peaks Road, you reach the junction where Copina is signposted. Up to this point, the road is paved. To reach the old suspension bridges, continue along the paved road until you find the remains of a burned-out truck, which marks the start of the gravel road to the left. Around 1913, the town of Copina housed the workers who began to battle the massive rock formations with picks, shovels, and explosives, creating one of the most important road infrastructure projects in the country at that time. According to historians, the first plans to build this road through the Sierras Grandes mountain range were completed in 1914, establishing a route of over 90 km; today, part of the old route coincides with the Altas Cumbres mountain range. It is said that Father Brochero passed through the area on his evangelizing journeys, and his constant appeals to the government were key to the road's construction. For decades, it was a path used only by hikers, horses, and mules. Its first four sections were opened to cars on March 2, 1916. Despite the celebrations of that day, many people claim that the Camino de los Puentes Colgantes (Road of the Hanging Bridges) was officially inaugurated on October 22, 1918, when the project was fully completed. The ceremony took place in the city of Villa Dolores. At that time, a large caravan of 60 cars traveled from the Traslasierra Valley to a midpoint along the road, where they met up with other adventurers who had arrived on horseback from the other end of the road, which was still under construction. Every year, the most attractive section of the World Rally Championship, the El Cóndor-Copina stretch, passes through this route in the Córdoba mountains. Sixty-five years ago, it was replaced by the modern Camino de las Altas Cumbres (High Peaks Road) of Provincial Route 34, and it is now used for tourism. Recently, the Provincial Government restored some of the bridges. The second bridge (counting from Copina towards El Cóndor) features a waterfall and a natural rock wall where mountaineers practice. After crossing a total of five bridges, at 1,450 meters above sea level, you reach the ruins of the now-abandoned Hotel El Cóndor. This site in the High Peaks is a popular spot for astrotourism enthusiasts on clear nights.
