China tells region ‘not to read too much into’ missile test
China has responded to concerns over its latest missile test, urging countries “not to read too much into it” and describing the launch as a routine military exercise. Australia, New Zealand, and Japan raised concerns after receiving only a few hours’ notice of the test. The long-range missile was reportedly launched from a nuclear-powered submarine and carried a dummy warhead. The warhead was not armed but is believed to be capable of carrying a nuclear payload.
