A remake of the cult 2001 RPG, developed for THQ Nordic by its Alkimia Interactive studio. The new Gothic stands out from the original primarily due to its completely rebuilt graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5. Gothic Remake is a remake of the 2001 RPG of the same name. While the original was developed by the German studio Piranha Bytes, this title was developed by the Spanish team at Alkimia Interactive (originally THQ Nordic Barcelona Studio), comprised of many die-hard fans of the original. The developer was formed under the auspices of THQ Nordic, which acquired the rights to the franchise in 2019. The original Gothic is a cult classic in Poland, partly due to its dubbing, so the remake naturally received a full localization, with actors from the original returning to key roles, including Jacek Mikołajczak (The Nameless One), Adam Bauman (Diego), Tomasz Marzecki (Xardas), and Przemysław Nikiel (Gorn). Albion handled the translation, while Roboto Sound handled the dubbing. Gothic Remake features a completely new visual style, incomparably more detailed than the original. This applies to the design of locations, characters, and monsters, as well as the animation. The developers strived to remain faithful to the original in terms of mechanics and content, while modernizing aspects such as the protagonist's controls and combat system. They also added a few side plot threads – mainly where the first Gothic had some gaps. Unreal Engine 5 was used to create Gothic Remake. The action in Gothic is presented from a third-person perspective (TPP). The developers provide players with a relatively small open world, featuring camps established by ore miners, mines, an orc village, and numerous ruins. The story is somewhat non-linear – players can choose which faction to join (Old Camp, New Camp, or Swamp Camp), which influences the course of the plot. In addition to quests that advance the story, various side missions await. The game world is not a safe place, and in addition to hostile convicts, monsters pose a threat. Although initially, players mainly face local fauna (such as wolves, giant beetles, and scavengers), over time they face increasingly stronger opponents (such as skeletons, orcs, and demons). Battles are dynamic, and during them we can use both melee weapons (one- and two-handed swords, axes, hammers) and ranged weapons (crossbows, bows), as well as offensive and defensive magic. As we progress, we gain experience points and, by leveling up, gradually increase our combat potential with the help of trainers scattered throughout the game world. In addition to combat-related abilities, the unnamed protagonist possesses other skills – for example, he can learn to sneak behind enemy backs, craft useful equipment, and even pick locks. Gothic Remake takes us to the fantasy kingdom of Myrtana, whose ruler, Rhobar II, has established a penal colony on the island of Khorinis. The convicts sent there must work hard mining ore in the so-called Valley of Mines. To prevent the prisoners from escaping, the mages have created a barrier that can only be penetrated from the outside. However, the spell spiraled out of control, and the dome eventually enveloped the entire Valley of Mines, trapping both the convicts and their guards, as well as the mages themselves... and the evil lurking in the land. Players take on the role of a nameless prisoner newly arrived at the colony.
