Infection after your hip or knee replacement surgeries can be caused by a myriad of reasons. Even those reasons can be clubbed together in various categories: e.g complications caused by surgeons which include the procedure undertaken by the surgeon, or how long the surgery is taking (because then your body is opened up to the outside atmosphere). Patients often have a lot of complications and we try to take that into account before the surgery. If they have a prior infection, we try to delay the infection. If they already have boils or pus accumulation at the area of the surgery, or have any other kind of health complication, it can also play a role in causing infection. With diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, patients already have poor health prior to the surgery. The most important factor is of course the patient. Patients often have a lot of complications and we try to take that into account before the surgery. If they have a prior infection, we try to delay the infection. If they already have boils or pus accumulation at the area of the surgery, or have any other kind of health complication, it can also play a role in causing infection. Of course, with diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, patients already have poor health prior to the surgery. If proper precautions are taken, the chances of infection can be reduced to nil.
