Knee Replacement Recovery Mistakes: How Patients Hurt Themselves
Knee Replacement Recovery: Why Days 3 to 6 Fool Almost Everyone . The first two weeks after a knee replacement decide a lot, and the biggest mistakes I see are not surgical complications. They are things smart, motivated people do to themselves with the best intentions. #kneereplacementrecovery . Modern pain control works well. An adductor canal block, an iPACK block, and numbing medicine placed around the joint at surgery can give you a couple of remarkably comfortable days. I call it the honeymoon. I once had a patient call me 48 hours after surgery, thrilled that he was out trimming his bushes. The problem is that swelling has not arrived yet at 48 hours. It settles in around days three through six, and if you spend your good days overdoing it, you meet that swelling at a much worse place. Feeling great early is a cue to pace yourself, not to test the knee. #surgeryrecovery . The opposite mistake is just as common. Some patients baby the new knee, afraid that weight will damage it. You can put full weight on your new knee right away. The walker and cane are for balance. Gentle daily motion, icing, and elevation are what actually move recovery forward. Then there is the dip. When the blocks fade and swelling peaks, the knee often feels worse than it did on day one. That is a dip, not a detour. Keep your motion going, take prescribed medicine on schedule before therapy, and let your team guide the taper. . Finally, know what is not normal: a red, swollen, painful calf, fever above 101.5, incision drainage, or pain that suddenly worsens. Those deserve a phone call, not a wait and see. You are never bothering us by checking. I perform more than 700 hip and knee replacements each year at the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee in Franklin, serving patients across Brentwood, Nashville, Williamson County, and Middle Tennessee. .
