Gezono Village in Misato Town, Shimomashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture 1. Area Overview Place Name: Shimokusano (pronounced: Gezono). Location: Misato Town, Shimomashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture (formerly Chuo Town). Located in a mountainous area at an altitude of approximately 350m, this area was dotted with scattered houses. Notation on Topographic Maps: Older topographic maps also appear to read it as "Gezono." 2. History and Population Changes Meiji Period: Records from the early Meiji period indicate that there were 11 households and 61 people living there, engaged in agriculture and woodsmanship. Showa Period: The population continued to decline, and by 1975, there were only 2 households and 4 people. Administrative History: In 1955, the area was incorporated into Tomochimachi (Tomochi Town). However, due to issues with children's commutes (likely due to difficulties commuting to Tomochi Elementary School), residents began calling for reversion, and in 1957, the area reverted to Chuomura (then Chuo Village). Notes There is a hall on the left around 3:11, but it has not been confirmed. It is said to be a Kannon hall enshrining the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva and a statue of Lord Kiyomasa. At 23:32, there is a communal grave. "Enshrining the spirits of Shimokusano ancestors, erected on an auspicious day in April 1990." The names of the builders, believed to be members of the village, are inscribed: Yamamoto, Tanida, Tanida, Morinaga, Yoshida, Sakaki, Sakaki, Sakaki, Morinaga, Sakaki, and Sakaki (12 people in total). I found a family crest in the cemetery, "Circle with Corners" (○・◇).
