Hinoura Village, located in Nishikurosawa, Hongo-cho, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It's said that Matsumae Kotaro, a powerful clan leader from near Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, became a fugitive from the Heike clan and took refuge in this village. I toured the village based on a high school report by Matsumae Yoko, who lived in the village. It was that time of year, and when I got out of the car (near the shrine), I spotted two yellow butterflies flying around. I couldn't help but exclaim, "What?!" Uemondayu, the cultivator of Nishikurosawa. Uemondayu first established his base in Shimokawachi (Shimogakinuchi) and, employing the labor of his servants and other servants, first began cultivating the area. After completing this reclamation, he continued cultivating Amedachi, Nakakura, Hinoura, and Kiya, in that order. *Additional note Matsumae Hayatonokami, who settled near Kitani Gorge in Nishiki Town, also visited Kurosawa, so it's possible they were brothers or traveled together. It's likely that Matsumae Kotaro and some of his family remained in the area.
