Deadly Econo Lodge fire in Wooster Township: 3 victims identified

Firefighters were first dispatched to the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. “En route we were told by dispatch that there is people on 911 saying they’re trapped in the building," said Chief Terrell. "Our first arriving engine arrived on scene with heavy flames through the roof and made several rescue attempts to try to reach the people in that room. Efforts were unsuccessful.” Chief Terrell said the situation was elevated to a five-alarm fire “due the complexity and size of the fire.” This brought out a total of 15 fire departments and approximately 70 firefighters. He said the fire was under control approximately one hour after units first arrived at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Wooster Township Fire Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshals Office. When asked if foul play is suspected, Chief Terrell said it's still under investigation. “This is a horrible tragedy, and we’re very sorry for their loss," Chief Terrell said.
