One food, ideally containing a novel or hydrolyzed protein, is fed for a minimum of 8 weeks Phase 2: Challenge. The pet should be switched back to their original diet and monitored for a flare up of symptoms. Usually this will occur within a few days, but can take up to a few weeks. If itching does worsen, proceed to the next phase. Phase 3: Confirmation. The pet is then switched back to the novel or hydrolyzed protein diet to monitor for resolution of itching, which may take 2 to 4 weeks. Phase 4: Identification. Continue feeding the novel or hydrolyzed protein diet, while offering previously fed proteins as treats or diet toppers. One ingredient at a time should be offered for up to 2 weeks while the pet is monitored for increased itchiness. If no signs are noted, the ingredient can be fed; if signs are noted, the ingredient should be avoided.
