A new investigation found commercial dog food may contain alarming levels of heavy metals and toxins. The Clean Label Project tested popular brands and reported higher levels of lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, BPA, plastics, and acrylamide in kibble compared to fresh or frozen dog food. Research from Cornell University suggests dogs may ingest 3–7 times more heavy metals from pet food than people do from human food. Dry dog food showed significantly higher contaminant levels, including elevated lead and mercury, plus acrylamide formed during high-heat extrusion. BPA and plastic-related chemicals were also more common in kibble packaging. Heavy metals can accumulate in the liver and kidneys and are linked to cancer, chronic disease, and immune dysfunction.
