What really happens in a spine consultation — and what actually matters? Many patients assume that scans are the most important part of diagnosis. In reality, the majority of a diagnosis is often made through a careful history and clinical assessment, long before imaging is reviewed. In this video, I explain how I structure my spine consultations and the principles behind them. We cover: • Why the history is the most important part of the consultation • What I look for before you even sit down • How symptoms guide diagnosis more than scans • What a focused physical examination adds • When imaging is helpful — and when it is not • How I use scans to confirm, not create, a diagnosis • Why I aim to give you a clear diagnosis and plan within a single consultation where possible • Why explanation and education are central to better outcomes The aim of a consultation is not simply to review images, but to understand your symptoms, clarify the diagnosis, and guide you toward the most appropriate management. The spine is strong. Most back pain is not dangerous. And clear explanation often improves outcomes as much as any intervention. There are multiple professionals (surgeons, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and more) who treat back and spine problems. But often they work independent of each other and few patients have someone taking responsibility of overall oversight of care in a team. I started my practice to bring all professionals of spine care together under my direction as a surgeon to provide spine care that gets results. TOTAL SPINE CARE THAT GETS RESULTS!
