COMMENT MULTIPLIER LA GLYCINE ET POURQUOI FAUT-IL PRÉFÉRER LES PLANTES GREFFÉES ?
Wisteria is one of the most spectacular and vigorous climbing plants. In the language of flowers, this elegant plant expresses a feeling of friendship. It is therefore a plant that can easily be given as a gift. But for the results to live up to our expectations, a quality plant that has been propagated using proven professional techniques is required. This is what NewsJardinTV editor-in-chief Patrick Mioulane invites you to do today. To do this, he traveled to the Orléans region, to the Javoy nurseries, where he was welcomed by the company's founder, Pierre Javoy, and his daughter, Marie-Laure Rauline, who, with her brother, Benoît, now presides over the future of this nursery specializing in climbing plants. Seated around a large table used for grafting, Pierre Javoy explains this technique, which can be likened to plant surgery. Grafting involves creating a close and permanent bond between the tissues of two plants, one of which, the rootstock, has roots that will nourish the scion, which belongs to the variety (which flowers well) and is to be propagated. Grafting is a vegetative propagation method that allows for faithful reproduction of the variety. For wisteria, cleft grafting is performed on a root taken from a vigorous adult specimen. The important thing is that the diameters of the rootstock (or plant) and the scion are similar. Pierre Javoy reveals a "professional secret": the scions must be taken from woody (non-flowering) shoots, preferably growing close to the ground. The buds of flowering shoots tend to dry out when grafted. As long as you take grafts from a wisteria that blooms well, there's no reason why the grafted specimens shouldn't flower. But why graft wisteria when it seems simpler to layer, take cuttings, or sow it? Wisteria produces many seeds, and seedlings germinate easily. However, because wisteria is entomogamous (it is pollinated by insects), varieties don't reproduce faithfully, and more importantly, wisteria grown from seed often takes many years to flower (8 to 15 years) or even never produces fragrant clusters. Furthermore, wisteria takes relatively little cutting (in any case, the success rate isn't high enough to satisfy a nurseryman). As for layering, it can be a very good propagation method for an amateur, but the number of plants produced is too small for it to be a professional endeavor. Marie-Laure provides the following important clarification: a Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) generally flowers the second year after grafting. On the other hand, a Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) is much slower and rarely flowers the first time until after 4 to 5 years. If you have a Chinese wisteria that's about ten years old and isn't flowering, it's probably a seedling. Therefore, you should make sure you buy a grafted wisteria by checking for a grafting ring at the base of the plant or simply by avoiding buying a plant that's too cheap (expect to pay at least €20) and preferably a French one, as French growers are committed to producing quality plants. In an upcoming video, we'll show you in great detail the grafting technique masterfully practiced by Pierre Javoy. Thank you all for watching and enjoying the NewsJardinTV videos.
