Congo: Siete pacientes se recuperan de ébola, entre ellos un bebé de 16 meses
(June 18, 2026) ASSOCIATED PRESS Rwampara, Democratic Republic of Congo - June 16, 2026 Seven patients, including a 16-month-old baby, have recovered from Ebola in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a positive development as Africa's top health agency warned that the outbreak could become the worst on record. Kahindo Mireille Pierrette and her baby left the Rwampara Treatment Center near Bunia, in Ituri province, the epicenter of the outbreak, on Tuesday. Pierrette took her son to the treatment center in late May, and upon leaving expressed her "immense joy" and gratitude to the doctors. SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Kahindo Mireille Pierrette, Ebola survivor: "Ebola exists," she said. “My son had it, and so did I, but the doctors treated us, and that's how we tested negative.” SOUNDBITE (French) Dr. Modet Camara, a doctor at the Alima Ebola Treatment Center in Rwampara: “When the child arrived at the hospital, he had unexplained bleeding. On the second day, we did a PCR test, and it came back positive for Ebola,” said the doctor. “Then we started antibiotic therapy.” The Congolese Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday that 837 cases of the virus have been confirmed, including 196 deaths. Since the outbreak was declared in mid-May, 49 people have recovered, the ministry said. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there is currently no approved treatment or vaccine. But health authorities advise seeking medical attention as soon as symptoms appear. SOIUNDBITE (French) Dr. Patrick Basara Mugisa, chief physician of the Rwampara health area: "It is possible to recover from Ebola," said this official. "The public should remember that arriving at the hospital on time will make it easier for the medical team to provide timely care so that the patient can recover." A decade ago, an outbreak in several West African countries caused more than 28,000 cases of Ebola and more than 11,000 deaths.
