What promised to be one of Brazil's greatest logistical revolutions is now at a standstill. The West-East Railway, or Fiol, which was supposed to connect the interior of Bahia to the coast and boost the flow of ore and grain, had its construction abruptly suspended. Construction had already consumed R$784 million in investments, with 75% of the structure completed—and yet, the project was halted. The railway was considered strategic not only for Bahia, but for the entire country's production chain. With its completion, Brazil would gain a new export route through Porto Sul, in Ilhéus, relieving pressure on ports in the Southeast and reducing logistical costs for agribusiness and mining. The announcement of the halt, made at the end of March 2025, dashed expectations and raised alarms about the instability in the execution of public works and private concessions in the country. But where exactly would this highway pass—and why was the work halted?
