1MBVR Training: Phase 3 Start the Conversation

Phase 3: Circle Conversations & Register Voters is the heart of the 1 Million Black Voters Rising Circle Leader journey. This training prepares Circle Leaders to move from building their Circle of 10 to deepening trust through real, consistent conversations that connect voting to the issues people already care about. Phase 3 is not a traditional voter registration drive or a scripted persuasion program. It is a relationship-centered organizing model rooted in listening, cultural trust, and community care. Circle Leaders are trained to guide four meaningful conversations across the campaign cycle: what Circle members care about, how they feel about voting, what is on the ballot, and how each person will make a voting plan. The training equips Circle Leaders to start with people’s real-life concerns — groceries, schools, jobs, housing, safety, healthcare, and family — and use those concerns as the bridge to civic power. Participants learn how to handle skepticism without shame or lectures, register and check voters using vote.org, document their Circle’s progress, and keep members engaged between formal gatherings through text messages, group chats, cultural touchpoints, and personal follow-up. At its core, Phase 3 helps Circle Leaders turn trust into action. The goal is not simply to ask whether someone is registered. The goal is to build a Circle where people feel seen, heard, informed, invited, and ready to vote because they understand what is at stake for their own lives and for the people they love. Community is the method. Registration is the metric. The Circle is the strategy.
