The Tifosi at the Monza racetrack were quite astonished…the petite woman who had just been strolling through the starting grid of the Italian Grand Prix, waving to the spectators…now put on a helmet and climbed into the Maserati 250F at the back of the field… And the Italians were even more surprised when a considerably older man leaned into the cockpit and gave the young lady some final instructions…the man wasn't just anyone…but the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, who had announced his retirement from motorsport only two months earlier… And the woman he was giving these final instructions to in an almost fatherly manner was Maria Teresa de Filippis…the first woman to qualify for a Formula 1 race…just a few weeks earlier…and even to finish the race… The Grand Prix circus in 1958 was a collection of alpha males…machos who…the little driver Sometimes mockingly called "pilotino"...little pilot...but it was none other than the best of them all who took little Maria Teresa under his wing...Fangio thinks highly of the young woman...fatherly, he even sometimes tries to rein her in...repeatedly telling her that she drives too fast...takes too many risks...unusual words from the five-time world champion...
