Our Shipbuilding Heading Toward the World Introduction to the World's Strongest Korean Shipbuilding Technology and the Ship Construction Process Korea's oil exploration vessels and drill ships boast a 95% share of the global market. These two types of vessels are high-tech, high-value-added ships designed to drill for crude oil in deep-sea areas where fixed platforms cannot be installed, or in rough seas. The Korean shipbuilding industry has even succeeded in constructing the world's first icebreaking tanker capable of breaking ice to transport crude oil. This segment introduces our proud shipbuilding technology and sheds light on the scientific principles hidden within the ship construction process. Developing the Mega Block Construction Method! The maximum weight a single crane can move to the dock is 500 tons. Consequently, moving countless blocks to the dock required a correspondingly long time, and completing a single ship also took a considerable amount of time. However, as order volumes increased, block production surged, sometimes even causing disruptions to the entire construction process. To resolve these issues and improve productivity, a new production method was devised: the "Mega Block Method." A Mega Block is an ultra-large block weighing over 3,000 tons—five to six times larger than conventional blocks. By assembling these Mega Blocks simultaneously in multiple locations before moving them to the dock, the overall construction period could be shortened by more than tenfold. To implement the Mega Block Method, a marine dock, also known as a "Floating Dock," was attempted for the first time in the world. Floating docks, which had previously been used only for ship repairs, were now being applied to full-scale ship construction. To move these heavy 3,000-ton Mega Blocks, marine cranes of a suitable size were introduced. Using this offshore crane, mega-blocks can be loaded freely along three sides of the offshore dock.
