Nietos, historias con identidad - La abuela Estela de Carlotto

Estela Barnes de Carlotto and Guido Carlotto were a married couple from the city of La Plata, Buenos Aires Province. They had four children, including 22-year-old Laura. In August 1977, Guido was kidnapped and, after 25 days of brutal torture, was released. Two months later, his daughter Laura suffered the same fate. She was pregnant when she was kidnapped by the dictatorship. On August 25, 1978, she was murdered, and in 1985, her remains were exhumed from the La Plata cemetery and identified by the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF). In June 2014, a young man who had doubts about his identity contacted the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo by email to learn about his origins. After several email exchanges, he submitted his formal application by mail. Subsequently, he visited the Grandmothers' headquarters, where the National Commission for the Right to Identity (CONADI) was notified, and immunogenetic analysis was performed at the National Genetic Data Bank (BNDG). Ignacio had long harbored doubts about his origins; however, he only confirmed that he was not the biological son of those who raised him after a confession from someone close to the family a few months before learning the truth. On August 5, 2014, the National Genetic Data Bank (BNDG) informed the National Commission for the Right to Identity (CONADI) and the courts that the young man was the son of Laura and Walmir Montolla. Ignacio was finally able to learn his history and reunite with his family. Public Television presents "Grandchildren, Stories of Identity," a series of short segments narrated by Víctor Hugo Morales. Through the testimonies of the protagonists, the series tells the story of the search by relatives of the disappeared and of children of the disappeared who recovered their identities and were reunited with their families. It also invites all young people who have doubts about their identity to contact the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo.
