Welcome in to Axiom Verge! This is a fantastic retro style game that’s somehow already over a decade old! This game very much leans into the style of Metroid (NES) and Super Metroid (SNES), but employs some unique gameplay mechanics to really set it apart, while still showing respect to its foundation – and maybe even some H.R. Giger influence in the artwork. In much the same style, we follow our protagonist, Trace, into the Breach and everything is wrong. The visuals are very much in the vein of NES & SNES, and you can really see the influence of the Metroid series, particularly the very beginning of Metroid (NES), and even games like Bionic Commando and some of the weapons from Fester’s Quest (NES). Let’s jump into the Breach and see if we can restore order and figure out what’s even happening in there! Playing this on PS5, recording through OBS on an Alienware Aurora R16.
