SCHWEDEN ROADTRIP #3 - VILDMARKSVÄGEN Schwedens berühmte Wildnisstraße

Traveling with dog and roof tent on the Vildmarksvägen, the wilderness road in Sweden. The Wilderness Road, called 'Vildmarksvägen' in Swedish, is the highest paved road in Sweden. A majestic route that leads through the extraordinary natural landscape of northern Sweden. The Vildmarksvägen, with a length of 370 km, runs from Strömsund to the Norwegian border, then crosses the high plateau (Stekenjokk) and heads east again into Vihelmina in southern Lapland. Since both the start and end points are on the E45, it is also called Sweden's most beautiful detour :-). The Vildmarksvägen offers a variety of lakes, rivers, and easily accessible waterfalls, such as the Hällingsåfallet. It is one of Sweden's highest waterfalls, cascading from a height of over 40 meters into the Hällingsån, Sweden's longest water-filled gorge. No less spectacular are the Gaustafallet and Trappstegsforsen waterfalls, along with many other waterfalls. The most famous section of the Wilderness Trail is undoubtedly the 20-kilometer stretch across the Stekenjokk Plateau (open only from June 6 to October 15). This is where the Sami have herded and cared for their reindeer for thousands of years. The Sami name for Stekenjokk is 'Stihken,' which means 'the place where the reindeer stay.' For those interested in learning more about Sami culture, a detour to the church village of Fatmomakke is both a kind of open-air museum and a still-active cultural site of the indigenous people of Lapland.
