During the traditional Easter closure (two weeks in 2026) in the Kinzig Valley in Hesse, extensive modernization work was carried out this year. Accordingly, work was in full swing at various points along the Kinzig Valley Railway. I have documented the work being carried out west of Salmünster, near the Kinzig meadows, in a short video series. In this third installment, a construction train with a track renewal machine is in operation. This machine is both removing the old sleepers and replacing them with new ones, while simultaneously replacing the rails. An ingenious system is employed: Several wagons loaded with sleepers are pushed in front of the track renewal machine. Gantry cranes use their lifting jaws to grab the new sleepers and transport them to the machine. There, the old sleepers are collected and loaded onto the wagons. The cranes move back and forth on the wagons during this process. The machine first detaches the rails from the sleepers and then bends them outwards. The old sleepers are collected and transported to a transfer platform, where they are picked up by a gantry crane. Meanwhile, the ballast bed is leveled so that the new sleepers can be laid on it. Finally, the new rails are threaded into place and fastened to the new sleepers. The old sleepers are collected and transported to a transfer platform where they are picked up by a gantry crane.
