A village in Toechon-myeon, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, established around an alternative school. At the entrance to the hilly village, a magnificent house resembling a soaring dragon has stood in the same spot for 16 years. The owner of this house is architect Won-gi, who grew up in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, and moved to Gangnam's prestigious "Gangnam School District 8" to study during middle school. The couple, who had lived near Gangnam and Bundang after marriage, boldly chose to move to Gwangju because they wanted to raise their children in a free environment. Husband Won-gi says he was quite ambitious as this was his first home as both an architect and a father. Perhaps that is why the exterior visible from the village entrance is so extraordinary. Unique materials and designs, such as high-density wood panels and blue exterior cladding, boast a commanding presence. The exterior walls, shaped like dragon scales, were inspired by an "earthworm." This is because the architectural philosophy was based on the ‘earthworm,’ the unsung hero that revitalizes the land. The stone walls, built low and rounded to match the children’s routes to and from school and their eye level, offer both visual appeal and tactile delight. Upon entering, the high ceilings and circular layout capture both a sense of openness and playfulness. Known in the past as a hotspot for tag, this house has long since achieved the goal set by the architect father: to "build a fun house." A step was created along the path from the kitchen to the living room to enhance the rhythm of the movement, and windows were positioned in the living room to allow for ever-changing views of the Namhan River. Furthermore, the second floor, the living space for the three siblings, was designed to respect their privacy and individuality... Gentle consideration for his wife is a given! If you follow the hidden stairs in the master bedroom, you will find a basement room buried about one-third of the way underground. It is a special gift prepared by Mr. Won-gi for his wife, who enjoys meditation and reading! Sunlight streams in through a narrow window positioned to match the wife's gaze, creating a perfect hideout exclusively for her, where she can look out at the flowers and trees blooming in the yard. The pinnacle of this house's charm is the Ojakgyo! Crossing the footbridge connected to the living room reveals a cabin that was once the playground for the three siblings. Although it was built simply out of plywood, the atmosphere is like a jazz bar! Now that the three children are all grown up, it serves as the couple's secret base. Additionally, the architect dad, Won-gi, has created his own laboratory in one corner of the yard. The theme is realizing the public nature of housing! Known as the "Tadpole Shelter," this outdoor space is located beneath the living room, which is elevated using a pilotis structure. Open to both children and neighbors, this place has served as a neighborhood gathering spot and resting place just as it did in the past.
