The incident, which occurred on July 16, 2026, has triggered a diplomatic disagreement between The Gambia and Senegal, with both governments presenting sharply different accounts of what happened and why. The Gambia Government described the incident as an unauthorised and provocative action by members of the Senegalese Armed Forces. According to Banjul, Senegalese soldiers demolished part of the perimeter fence surrounding a Gambia Armed Forces installation in Bulock without prior consultation. The government condemned the action as “profoundly provocative and totally unacceptable,” arguing that any concerns should have been raised through the established bilateral military and diplomatic channels. Gambian authorities also praised the soldiers stationed at the post for exercising restraint, saying their conduct helped prevent the confrontation from escalating. The public was reassured that the security situation remained calm and under control. Senegal, however, placed the incident within the context of a long-running territorial dispute over the location and management of the shared border. Dakar claimed that it had repeatedly informed Gambian authorities that certain installations and activities in the area amounted to encroachment on Senegalese territory. It said years of discussions between the two countries had failed to produce a permanent settlement. Although Senegal insisted that its actions should not be interpreted as an attempt to violate Gambian sovereignty or damage relations between the two countries, it argued that the Bulock incident demonstrated the urgent need to resolve the outstanding boundary dispute.
