CoPG reacts to Supreme Court's dismissal of constitutional challenge against the government.

The executive members of the Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) took part in the Wednesday Special Programme of AG Radio on Wednesday evening to give an in-depth analysis of the landmark Supreme Court judgment handed down earlier that day. Participants discussed the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss CoPG’s constitutional challenge to the Commission of Inquiry (Amendment) Act, 2023, and examined the legal, constitutional and political implications of the ruling. The group also considered the implications of the decision for constitutional governance, accountability, the rule of law and the future operation of commissions of inquiry in The Gambia. Executive members of CoPG during the programme reiterated that they respect the authority and independence of the Supreme Court, but expressed deep disappointment by its decision to dismiss their constitutional challenge. The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) maintained that the case raised important constitutional questions concerning the powers of commissions of inquiry and the protection of constitutional safeguards, adding that the judgement would continue to generate debate among legal experts, civil society organisations and the wider public.
