Jaguar Diagnostics: Save time and money with Jaguar SDD and IDS tools
Hi All, This week I was busy configuring and using the JLR SDD / IDS OBDII diagnostic and configuration software (version v131 that does NOT need a JLR Topix account to use) on a legacy Windows XP virtual machine. The software covers jaguar (and Landrover) cars from 1996 through to 2012. Not just for fun - I had an intermittent issue with the restricted performance light coming on in my 2003 Jaguar S-Type R. This set-up not only enabled me to identify the P codes, it also provided deeper level codes that enabled me to pin-point the exact issue and just replace the failing part. Another use-case is to check the general health of the car: a sensible task to complete if considering any performance upgrades that could cause existing unknown issues to become more serious. Obviously, any car needs to be healthy before implementing any upgrades. This video does focus on technical detail, but I hope that the overview and step by step instruction can help those who need to do similar or are just curious. Finally, I should mention that the OBDII port on the Jaguar S-Type is located underneath the steering column just to the left-hand side of it. Several folks have reached out with issues pertaining incomplete programming and not being able to use their vehicles. As stated in the video, I connect a battery charger when I know I'm going to use IDS so I have a fully charged battery in excellent health and a power input. Re-programming a module such as the ECM can take up to 3 hours and can draw a lot from the battery. If IDS/SDD detects a low voltage condition, the programming will most likely fail (requiring a repeat of the same operation or worse - a recovery of the VID block). Jaguar recommend a 40 amp 12.6 volt voltage stabiliser power input device, although a 30 amp 12.6 volt device will probably be fine. Never use IDS/SDD for long periods of time or for reprogramming without a suitable power input device. Laptops should also be connected to mains power if reprogramming.
