ARK John Macaluso "Torn" Playthrough/Burn The Sun 25th Anniversary

Here is the 3rd playthroiugh video I released for the 25th Anniversary of ARK's Burn The Sun album. 3 is a charm so here we go with one of my favorite tracks on the album titled "TORN" Here is a little insight into this song for the ARK people out there, who I know like this stuff. Burn The Sun was released in 2001 but not many people know that we actually recorded the album's music 3 times, in 3 different countries, that's just another example of 3 being a charm! We wrote this song when the guys flew over to stay with me in at my place in Queens, New York. We were doing the first writing sessions for our second album. This was the second song we wrote drums and guitar to, the first was "Feed The Fire" which was drastically changed from the original version in the recording studio, it's never over till it's over! So "TORN" was written like all ARK songs, by me and guitarist Tore jamming for hours and recording everything then listeng back at night and picking the best parts to then put together for songs. This song was written around the drum pattern which is influenced from Bill Bruford on the King Crimson album Displine. Bill would ride his right hand on an octoban drum instead of a ride cymbal, brilliant method, I love the sound and inovation. I mixed that idea with some Indian tabla rhythms to finalize this verse drum beat. A couple of nights before we started writing this song I took the guys to Manhattan to see a show with an amazing Indian drummer named Trilok Gurtu. He was so great that night that he influenced us all. Not only the drumming on this song was influenced by Trilock but also the vocals! Check out the bridge section of this song at 2:30 minutes. I play tabla drums and the Indian counting system is a whole language, a rhythm language that is used to break down rhythms and recite them before you play them. Here Jorn the singer is imitating what he saw Trilock Gurtu do at the show, sing the rhythms and then play them in the rhythmic language. So that was the idea for the meat of the song. The spacy vibe on the guitar was invented again in New York on this trip. We just got some of our advance money to make the Burn The Sun album and like most muscians, why be responsible and spend it where it is supposed to be spent, on making the album? We did what any muscian would do..... GO SHOPPING! It was the guys from Norway's first time in New York so we went to 48th street in Manhattan where there are tons of music stores up and down the street. Tore the guitarist bought a Space Echo effect pedal and an EBow. The day after we jammed and all this that I just talked about came together in the rehearsal studio and the result was "Torn" One quick note, Burn The Sun's music was partly written and as things progressed the music was geting better and better, so we stopped the recording sessions in New York to concentrate on actually finishing all the music first and then recording the album from start to finish. We started again in Norway but again things were getting better and better so we were beating the tracks we layed down with new tuff and better material, A GOOD PROBLEM actually, so we stopped again the second time. Months later we finally heading to , Celle,Germany and recording the album that you hear today. I am glad we did it that way because only the strongest song material survived and became a groundbreaking album in every way, ARK's Burn The Sun! This was recorded with me playing and recording the drum track in my studio and then mixing it together with the real audio from the album. Here's "TORN" John Mac
