ARK JOHN MACALUSO "Absolute Zero" Drum Playthrough
It's the 25th Anniversary of an album that changed everything for me in many ways, ARK's BURN THE SUN. We wrote it in 2000 and released it in 2001' This album was and still is my baby, even after hundreds hundreds of studio albums recorded in my carreer, this one is still IT for me! For the last 25 years I have gotton so many emails and talked to people around the world who tell me it changed their lives as well, maybe because it's as real as it gets. It was a crazy, unbalanced time in all of our lives when we did this album and we used it for good and just put it all down on the album from playing to writing to lyric writing, vibe, feel, emotion, power, happiness and pain! We just threw it all down on an album and here is the result. Happy 25th Birthday BURN THE SUN. Last week I did a playthrough video of the last song on the album called "Missing You" There was such a great overwhelming responce with comments and mails from everywhere so I decided to do one more song. This track is my favorite from the Burn The Sun album, it's "ABSOLUTE ZERO" Quick story about this track, At the time we started writing the album I was on a kick trying to play like a machine with feel and sound: A lot of Drum & Bass music, a lot of electro music, tech miusic etc. So ARK, a band with NO RULES, did this one blening metal, fretless bass, linear jungle drumming and Pink Floyd. So the obvious Bjork influence is in there as well with the vocals. When we all got together in the studio in Germany to recoerd the album, we spend a half a day doing a photo session and the photographer put on a Bjork song in the background called "Joga" it was on a loop and he never changed it so we took photos and listened to it the whole afternoon about 8,000 times!!! Jorn our singer started to immitate her at night at dinner and it was amazing so the next day in the studio we were almost ready to record the vocals and we were both writing the lyrics together and Jorn said quick we need another verse and a bridge and I can record. I couldn't think quick enough because we were lyriced out from writing lyrics on the spot in the studio all week long. This was one of the last songs to record so all our cool lyric ideas we obviously used already. The only book in English on the book shelf was a science book about planets and space. I grabbed it and just started jotting down cool phrases that worked with the title and we went with it. Jorn had the book in his hand with circled cool words and sentences and I said, "yo, try to do the Bjork thing" and he did. We all freaked because it was just on the spot and improv. and I think it came out brilliant. In the studio, it ain't over till it's over. Here we go, "Absolute Zero" This in my recorded drums I did in my studio this week mixed in with the original song, hope you dig. Thanks ALL, J. Mac
