TOLDI MIKLÓS - The End of The Age of KNIGHTS

For centuries, historians believed Toldi Miklós never existed — that he was nothing more than a creation of folk imagination. Then the medieval documents came to light. Toldi Miklós, a nobleman from Bihar County in eastern Hungary, was born around 1320 and served as a knight under King Louis I of Hungary — known to history as Louis the Great — whose reign is still called the age of chivalry in Hungarian historical memory. 14th-century Angevin-era charters confirm his existence beyond doubt. He was an educated man, literate in Latin, who rose from administrator to soldier. In 1363, King Louis himself appointed Toldi to lead a military campaign to Italy in defense of the Holy See, against the forces of Milan that had been ravaging papal territories. Toldi won. After the campaign, he remained in Italy and became the commander of the Hungarian contingent — around 1,600 men — within the Anglo-Hungarian mercenary force known as the White Company, serving the Pope against the enemies of the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples. In the summer of 1365, the White Company was defeated by German mercenaries, and Toldi was taken prisoner. The contract terms of his release survive to this day. He returned home in 1366. In Louis the Great's court he held the positions of count of Gömör, Heves, Bihar, and Szabolcs counties in succession. He received a land grant from King Sigismund of Luxembourg as late as 1388. The last reliable record places him around 1390, exchanging his Bihar estate for another village. The legendary poet János Arany immortalized Toldi in his 1847 trilogy — weaving folk tales and real history together. The millstone, the wolves, the duel with the Bohemian knight cannot be confirmed by documents. But the Neapolitan campaigns, the royal court, the land of Bihar: all of it is real. This song is not about the literary hero. It is about the aging knight — who served through an entire era, survived the wars, and one day laid down his sword on the windswept plain of Bihar. 🎼 Symphonic Cold — Legendák album Dark Electro | EBM | Orchestral | Saxophone 📖 Learn more: Toldi Miklós — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikl%C3...
