On August 11, 1456, three weeks after the victory, John Hunyadi died. Not by the enemy's hand. By plague — which had broken out in the camp during the long siege, and made no distinction between victor and vanquished. John of Capistrano followed him on October 23. The two men without whom Belgrade would have fallen never lived to hear Europe celebrate them. The noon bell, which the world now associates with the victory, was ordered by Pope Callixtus III before the battle — as a desperate prayer, because he believed everything was already lost. The bell rang first as supplication, not as triumph. Then the victory came, but the heroes did not come home. The bell kept ringing, and the world celebrated — while plague moved silently through the camp beside the Danube. The chronicles recorded a victory. They committed heroic names to posterity. But those who were there knew what it cost. This is not the song of the battle. This is the song of the price. Of a victory after which no celebration came — only silence, fever, and long mourning.
