A fascinating lecture on Augustine of Hippo—one of history's most brilliant and influential thinkers—his time in Rome, the mythical capital of the Roman Empire, and his life in Milan, where he reached the pinnacle of his political and professional career as the Emperor's "magister rhetoricae," equivalent to the Empire's Minister of Propaganda, one of the most brilliant intellectual figures of the Empire and of history. In Milan, he met Ambrose, former consular governor of the provinces of Liguria and Emilia, based in Milan, when he was elected Bishop of what was then the capital of the Roman Empire. There, he converted from Manichaeism to Christianity, and it was there that he decided to return to Africa Proconsularis, his homeland, the Empire's then-richest province, where he was also appointed Bishop of Hippo and where he led a prodigious intellectual life. All of this is brought to us by Professor Fernando Simón Yarza, a wise and highly knowledgeable expert on Augustine of Hippo and a gifted popularizer.
