2,000 Lives Lost in Seconds: The Day a City Was Destroyed | The Halifax Explosion | Full Documentary
It was the morning of December 6th, 1917 when the Mont Blanc and the Imo collided in the Halifax harbour. The ships were engulfed in flames as onlookers gathered by their windows to watch from the safety of their own homes. What they did not realize was that the Mont Blanc, a French munitions ship, was minutes away from causing one of worst manmade explosions in all of history. The explosion levelled the city, propelling glass shards, window fragments and other debris into the faces of all of those who watched on. On that day, 2000 people lost their lives, and 9000 more were injured; hundreds of people, of all ages and walks of life, became visually impaired, most from flying shards of glass. How they were treated provides insight into a unique and devastating event in Canadian medical history and demonstrates how eye injuries were treated and managed in 1917. There are countless stories of tragedy, devastation and heroism from the Halifax Explosion, a a dramatic event in 1917. But, this documentary will share stories from a unique perspective, by recounting the dramatic events of individuals who lost their sight, those were there to lend aid and support to the injured, and then those individuals and groups who made significant contributions in improving lives of blind Canadians for generations to come. With support from near and far, the event galvanized the community, leading to improvements to the region and its citizens.
