CELEBRAÇÃO EUCARÍSTICA NA CAPELA DE Nª SR.ª DAS VITÓRIAS, LAGOA DAS FURNAS | 2024

Saturday, October 12, 2024, the Parish of Our Lady of Remedies organized the Senior Citizens' Outing 2024 and, as has been customary on these outings, the Eucharist was celebrated at noon for the participants. This time the Eucharistic celebration was held at the Chapel of Our Lady of Victories, near Furnas Lagoon. The Chapel of Our Lady of Victories is located in Furnas, municipality of Povoação, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores.[1] It is considered one of the richest and most original temples in the archipelago. It is classified as a Property of Public Interest by Resolution No. 187/98, of August 6, and by Resolution No. 56/2001, of May 17.[1] History It was erected by José do Canto, as a result of a vow made on the occasion of his wife's serious illness. His will, written on June 27, 1862, states: “Having made, during the most serious illness of my wife, in 1854, a vow to build a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Victories, and not having yet fulfilled my purpose due to circumstances beyond my control, I order that the said building be constructed, if it is not completed at the time of my death, on the site I had chosen, next to the Furnas Lagoon, with the same decency and good arrangement in which I, if I were alive, would have built it.” The chapel was erected during José do Canto's lifetime, resulting in it becoming a small artistic marvel, in the neo-Gothic style, imitating the great European cathedrals. The stonework was executed by stonemasons from São Miguel under the leadership of Master António de Sousa Redemoinho, from Vila Franca do Campo. The chapel was greatly enhanced by its richly decorated stained-glass windows. It was solemnly inaugurated on August 15, 1886, while José do Canto was still alive. Newspapers of the time referred to this celebration in laudatory terms. The image on the main altar is made of jasper, and the stained-glass windows surrounding the temple depict scenes from the life of Our Lady, from her birth to her Assumption. The Chapel of Our Lady of Victories was built near the summer house of José do Canto, who is buried there with his wife. Bibliography: Açores Newspaper, 1955.
