ABIA LAUNCHES AFFORDABLE HOUSING SCHEME, REVIVES ENYIMBA SHOE & GARMENT FACTORIES

The Abia State Government has unveiled major development initiatives to increase access to affordable housing, revive local manufacturing and boost confidence in the state’s education sector. The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, has stated that Abia State is set to commence the Pocket Layout Housing Scheme, a project aimed at providing Abians with functional and affordable homes. The declaration was made by the Commissioner on behalf of Governor Alex Otti after the State Executive Council meeting held this week. The government also announced the resumption of full production at the Enyimba Automated Shoe Company (ENASCO) and the Enyimba Garment Factory in Aba after years of idleness. The revival was made possible through the acquisition of modern manufacturing and finishing equipment to position the factories to compete with leading local and international brands while creating jobs and boosting the state’s industrial economy, officials said. Commenting on the development, ENASCO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nena Kalu-Ogba said the resumed production capacity and the resolve of the government to rebuild Abia’s manufacturing sector was a clear indication that the state was on the path of industrialisation. The briefing also dwelled on public issues on admission into the newly commissioned Ọgbọ Smart School, Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area. Officials denied claims the admission process was for the children of the elite only, saying it was open and transparent for all.
