The EC 81 is together with the opposite direction EC 80 the only train from Munich to Italy, which wasn´t jet changed to the new Railjet 2 trains. That means, aboard this train you have the opportunity, to travel in the classic ÖBB Eurofima-carriages. On the day of my journey the train consisted of a locomotive Class 1216 and eight carriages, four ex-Nightjet seating carriages and four Eurocity carriages. Already before the start of the journey there was a little issue: because the carriage, where I reservated my seat in, was another type than planned, my seat number didn't exist. Luckily the conductor relegated me to the first carriage after the locomotive, where they kept seats free for passengers without seat reservation. And that's how I still managed to get my desired place. At first the journey takes us via Kufstein and the old Unterinntalbahn-railway, after Jenbach the new one, which mostly takes course in a tunnel, to Innsbruck. From Innsbruck the train runs to the top of the Brenner pass over a winding railway, and down a less winding tunnely railway on the italian side. It continues through South Tyrol and Trentino, where you can expect an especial beautiful view of the mountain range. Unfortunately I was unlucky with the weather. As soon as the train reaches Venetia, the landscape gets plane and continues to be until Venice. In Italy the railway partially allows a maximum speed of 180 km/h. But the train didn't reach it, it rather reached a speed of 150 to 160 km/h. Very remarkable is, that the train departed from Vicenza with a delay of 25 minutes and reached Padova, which is not far away, on time again, even one minute before schedule, without even using the maximal allowed speed.
