The Funnel Hide - Photographing Brown Hare
Part 4 of our wildlife photography series takes us into open farmland and low light magic as me and my dad—Pops—head back to Wildlife Photography Hides UK, owned by Tom Robinson, to photograph an animal that’s been on my personal wish list for years: the European Hare. Despite spending countless hours in the field, this incredible species has always managed to stay one step ahead—until now. The European hare is fast, alert, and wired for survival. Seeing one up close, let alone photographing it in perfect light, is no small feat. But with Tom’s expert hide setup and a bit of patience, this finally became possible. We arrive in late afternoon and settle into a low-level hide with a perfect view across golden stubble fields. As the sun begins to set, the soft evening glow rolls in—and so do the hares. What follows is a mix of tense waiting, quick reactions, and a lot of excitement as these stunning animals appear, graze, and occasionally take off in full-speed bursts across the field. In this episode: Beautiful golden hour footage of the European Hare in its natural habitat Candid moments between me and Pops as we wait, watch, and react Photography techniques for shooting shy mammals at a distance Behind-the-scenes look at one of the UK’s finest wildlife hide locations A personal milestone ticked off—and one we won’t forget 📍 Location: Wildlife Photography Hides UK Bourne, Lincolnshire 🐇 Target Species: European Hare 🎥 With: Me and Pops 📸 Shot using long lenses, low angles, and late evening light This encounter has been a long time coming. If you love real wildlife moments, the buzz of finally getting the shot, and the bond that comes with sharing it all with someone close—this one’s for you.
