One Day as a Peasant in France, 1347 | History for Sleep
One full day in the life of a medieval French peasant, in the autumn of 1347. A calming history documentary for sleep and relaxation. You wake before dawn in a single cold room, on a bed of straw, surrounded by your family and your animals. The fire is low. The bell has not yet rung. Outside, the village is dark in the way that villages were dark before electricity — absolutely, completely, without a single point of artificial light anywhere on the horizon. The day is about to begin. And somewhere, two weeks' journey to the south, in the port of Marseille, something has arrived on a ship from the east that will change everything. You do not know this yet. In this video, we follow one complete day in the life of a peasant in the Languedoc region of southern France in the autumn of thirteen forty-seven — the last normal year before the Black Death arrived in France and killed between a third and a half of its population. We go to the lord's fields before we go to our own, because the corvée demands it. We pass through the village — the mill, the blacksmith, the church, the widow who knows herbs — and we see how the feudal system actually worked from the inside, not from the outside. We eat what peasants actually ate, which is darker and simpler and more interesting than the popular image suggests. We attend Mass in Latin we do not understand and pray to saints we believe can hear us and confess to a priest who knows more about us than we have ever told him. We hear, for the first time, the word that is moving north from Marseille. And in the evening, by the light of the fire, we mend a piece of harness and listen to an old woman who remembers a sickness from forty years ago and is quietly preparing for what she thinks might be coming. The Black Death will reach this region within months. What happens to this village cannot be said with certainty, because this village left no records. What happened to villages like it throughout France is known with terrible precision. But that is later. Tonight, the fire is low and the bell has not yet rung and the day is about to begin, exactly as it has begun every day for two hundred years in this village, and the work is waiting, and the work is what there is. 🌙 A long-form history video designed for sleep, relaxation, and calm listening.
