How The World Began According to the Ancient Greeks
How did the universe begin? It is one of the oldest questions human beings have ever asked, and the ancient Greeks gave their own remarkable answer. In the beginning, they said, there was only Chaos. A vast and empty void out of which the first beings emerged, and from whom the gods, the heavens, the earth and eventually mankind would all be descended. Our fullest surviving account comes from the poet Hesiod, whose Theogony was composed in the eighth century BC, around the same time as Homer's Iliad. Hesiod attempted nothing less than a complete explanation of how the cosmos had come into being and how its rulers had risen and fallen. His poem describes a violent sequence of cosmic dynasties, beginning with the primordial deities born of Chaos, passing through the reign of the Titans under Cronus, and ending with the establishment of Zeus and the Olympian order familiar to every reader of Greek myth. These stories did not come out of nowhere. Modern scholarship has shown that the Greek creation tradition shares clear patterns with the much older myths of Mesopotamia and Anatolia, suggesting that Hesiod was working with material carried westward across the ancient world over many centuries. The great flood that ended the first age of mankind, sent by Zeus to destroy a corrupted race of mortals, has notable parallels in the biblical story of Noah and the far older Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh. The Greeks were drawing on a deep well of human storytelling that long predated them. The influence of the Greek creation story on Western thought has been profound. It shaped the cosmology of the Pre-Socratic philosophers in the sixth century BC, who took the idea of order emerging from Chaos and turned it into the foundation of natural philosophy. It was retold by Ovid at the opening of his Metamorphoses and passed through him into the imagination of Dante and Milton. Even the word "chaos," used today to describe disorder of any kind, carries the memory of the Greek beginning of all things. In this video, we tell the entire story of Greek creation from beginning to end. From the emergence of the first beings out of Chaos, through the castration of Ouranos and the rise of the Titans, Prometheus and Pandora, to the great war that brought Zeus to power and the flood that ended the first age of mankind.
