In today's Bible study, in Psalm 85, we find a profound prayer for restoration, forgiveness, mercy, and revival. The psalmist begins by recalling what God had already done for His people: “You have blessed your land, Lord; you have restored the fortunes of Jacob.” Psalm 85:1 Before asking for restoration, he remembers God's faithfulness. This memory strengthens the prayer. The same God who has restored before remains powerful to restore again. The psalmist acknowledges that God forgave the iniquity of the people and covered all their sins: “You forgave the iniquity of your people; you covered all their sins.” Psalm 85:2 But the psalm also reveals that the people still needed a new intervention from the Lord: “Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us.” Psalm 85:4 Biblical restoration is not merely an improvement in circumstances. It is a return to a right relationship with God. It is repentance. It is reconciliation. It is a change of direction. The cry of Psalm 85 reaches one of the strongest phrases in the text: “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” Psalm 85:6 This verse reveals an essential truth: God's people need to be revived by God himself. There is no manufactured revival. There is no restoration produced solely by human effort. There is no true joy when the heart remains distant from the presence of the Lord. The joy of the people should not be only in the blessings received, but in God himself: “that your people may rejoice in you.” Psalm 85 also shows the fruit of restoration: “Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” Psalm 85:10 When God restores, mercy and truth do not compete. Justice and peace do not cancel each other out. God does not restore by ignoring sin. He restores by leading people to truth, repentance, justice, and peace. The psalmist declares: “Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.” Psalm 85:9 Salvation is near to those who fear the Lord. The fear of God opens the way for glory to dwell. Psalm 85 teaches us: • We need to remember what God has already done • Restoration begins with a return to the Lord • Forgiveness does not eliminate the need for continuous repentance • God's people need to be revived by God • True joy is in the Lord, not just in what He delivers • Mercy and truth go hand in hand • Justice and peace are part of true restoration • Glory dwells where there is fear of God Today's study question is direct: Do you only want relief or do you desire true restoration before God?
