This time, I want to invite you to discuss a pretty exciting and fun topic. The topic is Shocking! China's First Lady (President's Wife) Turns Out to Be an Indonesian from Semarang. Do you know the People's Republic of China (PRC)? Yes, China is the second-largest economy in the world after the United States, which is predicted to surpass the United States in the next few years. It's no wonder, China's rapid and massive economic growth has rendered no other country capable of matching the strength and economic vibrancy of this glorious country. And did you know that this largest and most advanced country is inseparable from its leader? If the leader were weak, China wouldn't be as advanced as it is today. And history has proven that a great leader is always the result of a great wife or first lady. Well, the exciting news is that the wife of the Chinese leader is actually an Indonesian, originally from Semarang, Central Java. Wow! Not many people know that in modern Chinese history, an Indonesian woman held the honorable position of first lady. That figure was Oei Hui-lan. Oei Hui-lan was born in Semarang on December 21, 1889, to Oei Tiong Ham and Goei Bing Nio. From birth, Oei Hui-lan was accustomed to eating with a gold spoon. Her father, also born in Semarang, was a renowned sugar entrepreneur with a fortune of 200 million guilders (approximately Rp 44 trillion). He was also nicknamed the World Sugar King of Semarang. In her memoir, "Oei Hui Lan: The Story of the Daughter of the Sugar King of Semarang," she recounts her life as a tycoon's daughter, a dream shared by every woman in the world. She was born beautiful and had everything her father had given her. Her house in Semarang alone spanned 80 hectares, complete with a private villa and pavilion. She also didn't have to tire herself out sweeping and cooking, as she was provided with numerous servants and cooks. Every birthday as a teenager, her father always threw a lavish party, complete with grand decorations, numerous guests, and renowned entertainment. "My father wanted my birthday party to be very special. Whatever the cost, it didn't matter to him," Oei Hui Lan recalled. Then, if she got bored at home, she could simply choose any location to go on vacation. This helped her make many friends around the world. This extensive network of friends led her to meet the British Royal Family and a Chinese politician who changed the course of her life. His name was Wellington Koo. First Lady Hui Lan first met Wellington Koo in London, around the 1920s. At the time, Hui Lan was a widow and had settled in London with her mother after her father had left for another woman. Meanwhile, Koo was a widower and a diplomat representing China. Koo's position at the time was the second most important figure in China. In Makers of the Modern World: Wellington Koo (2008), it is explained that he frequently made policy and led China's diplomatic efforts internationally. One of his roles was being a founding member of the League of Nations. After finding a good match, Oei Hui Lan and Wellington Koo married in Brussels in 1921. A year later, Koo rose to become China's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance, respectively. During this period, Hui Lan officially became an official's wife, reaching her peak in 1926. After the death of Chinese President Sun Yat-sen, Koo became acting President of the Republic of China, effectively making Oei Hui Lan the first lady. She recounted in her memoirs that her husband consistently safeguarded the Republic of China's existence by garnering support worldwide. Wherever her husband went, Oei Hui Lan was by his side as his companion until he stepped down in 1927. After leaving office as First Lady, Hui Lan lived with her husband in various cities, from Shanghai to Paris to London. Long story short, their relationship ended in divorce in 1958. Afterward, Oei Hui Lan lived in New York to raise her three children. However, she didn't forget Indonesia. She is known to have done business in Indonesia. According to Sam Setyautama's account in "Torah-lakuan Ethnic Tionghoa di Indonesia" (2009), in 1986, Hui Lan started businesses in Indonesia selling ships, tobacco, and bicycles, but all failed. This Semarang-born woman's career ended in 1992 after she died in New York, a city 16,000 km from her homeland. So, for those of you interested in this content, please watch the video until the end.
