SIN TIEMPO PARA LA VIDA. Keynes, Russell y Brielle frente a la jornada laboral de 8 horas
Do we work too much? Or too little? What would the greatest thinkers of the 20th century think if they could see us now? A video has gone viral in which a girl named Brielle cries inconsolably because she has to work eight hours a day. Many will think she's a spoiled, lazy young woman who doesn't want to work. However, as we'll show in this video, J. M. Keynes and B. Russell, two of the most important thinkers of the 20th century, were firmly convinced, in the 1930s, that one hundred years later—that is, right now—humanity would not have to work more than three hours a day. Why have the predictions of these two great intellectual geniuses failed so miserably? Why does this idea, which at the time seemed like common sense, now seem utopian or absurd? We must reflect on the capitalist economic system, a system that does not allow for the distribution of labor and locks us into the fatal dilemma of overwork or unemployment, also generating crises of overproduction and environmental degradation that could prove fatal to the survival of humanity. Capitalism is an economic system that, in this sense, has robbed society of its most unique potential: the ability to have free time for the Republic, the cultivation of the arts and sciences, and the moral progress of humanity. Capitalism has materialized what for Aristotle was the worst nightmare, the greatest danger looming over the city: hubris, the disease of infinity in the polis. 👉 TikToker Brielle's video: https://www.publico.es/tremending/202... 📰 Brielle, Keynes, and Russell on the 8-hour workweek: https://blogs.publico.es/dominiopubli... -- 00:00 Brielle's video 2:25 The political significance of Brielle's tears 4:35 Keynes: The economic possibilities of our grandchildren 8:49 Aristotle and the hubris virus 11:06 The vaccine of the industrial revolution: The 3-hour workday 13:35 Capitalism makes the vaccine impossible. 14:40 Paul Lafargue: The right to be lazy 18:00 Bertrand Russell: In praise of idleness 26:00 What shall we do with free time? 29:52 Capitalist productivity itself refutes the system 31:25 Capitalism, Keynes, Russell, and Brielle 33:05 Changing the criminal system.
